Make giving a family tradition

Day 102 of #LiveWell2017

Day 102 tradition of giving (1)

A fun way to cultivate generosity is to make giving a family tradition. A met a woman last year who told me about her family’s giving tradition. Each December, she and her adult brothers and sisters and their families sit down together and choose one charity to donate money to at the end of the year. They each nominate a cause and discuss the work that is being done by the charity and make a selection.

Another family I know spend’s each child’s birthday cleaning books at the Children’s Book Bank and asks all their friends to donate a book to the book bank instead of bringing a gift to the birthday child. The kids have fun, do good, and learn about helping people who are less fortunate than they are.

Our family had a tradition of hosting a Holiday Open House and Toy Drive, asking all our guests to come to our party and bring a new toy or food to give to the annual local Community Services Center’s toy drive. It was a fun way to enjoy time with our friends and enabled us to give much more than we could on our own.

Do you have a family giving tradition? What is it?
